How to Build an AI Policy for Employees

A good AI policy answers a simple question for every employee: what am I allowed to do, and what should I never do? Most policies fail because they are either too vague to follow or too restrictive to respect.

Start with principles, not rules

Ground the policy in a few principles — protect confidential data, verify important outputs, keep a human accountable — and then derive specific rules from them.

Be explicit about data

• What data can and cannot be entered into external tools
• Which approved tools are covered by your agreements
• How to handle customer and personal information
• When to use enterprise versus consumer accounts
